This was a test piece for a custom gift project — a Canadian coat of arms carved into mulberry wood for someone in the armed forces. The customer supplied the artwork and we worked out how to bring it to life in wood.
The wood is mulberry, which starts as a bright straw colour and ages into a rich reddish brown over time. It has a tendency to check, but the grain and colour change make it a striking choice for a display piece.
Unfortunately the project stalled before completion, but the test piece came out well and shows what’s possible with detailed artwork on solid wood.
